Before you finally choose your knitted pattern, take some time to knit a work example – however it's not the work example you usually knit to measure the number of stitches in the breadth and the rows in the height.
Only by that you can form a better opinion about the possibilities and the effect of the pattern according to your way of knitting – especially if you deal with a fancy pattern.
This work example should help you to make a deliberated decision and become known with the method of operation of your pattern before you start with the real knitting work.
The number of stitches is dividable by 4 plus 2 stitches on the edge. 1st row: 1 stitch on the edge, * first leave off the needle the 2nd stitch of the two following stitches from right behind, then the 1st stitch right and just now let both stitches slip off the left needle, lift of 2 stitches left, thereby lead the thread on in the back, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 2nd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * first leave off the needle the 2nd stitch left of the two following stitches from the front, then the 1st stitch left, afterwards let both stitches slip off the left needle, lift off 2 stitches left, thereby lead on the thread on front, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 3rd row: All stitches right. 4th row: All stitches left. Constantly repeat these 4 rows.
(Results in an angular knitting work) The number of stitches is dividable by 4 plus 2 stitches on the edge. 1st row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 foldover 4 stitches right, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 2nd and 4th row: All stitches left. 3rd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 foldover, let slip off the needle the third stitch first of the following 3 stitches from right, then knit together the 2nd and 1st stitch from right, now let these 3 stitches slip off the left needle, now knit up the next 2 stitches – first the 2nd stitch from behind right and then the 1st stitch right, then let both stitches slip off the left needle, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. Constantly repeat the 3rd and 4th row.
The number of stitches is dividable by 4 plus 2 stitches on the edge. 1strow: All stitches right. 2nd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * lay the thread to the front, lift off 1 stitch left, thread to the back, 3 stitches right, grab with the left needle the backmost wire netting of the last knitted-up stitch (from back to the front) and pull the last lifted stitch over the 3 right stitches of the right needle, then lift the grabbed wire netting onto the right needle, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 3rd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 3 stitches left, grab with the left needle the lateral lying thread wire and knit it together twisted with the following right stitch (i. e. grasping the backmost wire nettings), thereby wrap the thread twice instead of once around the right needle, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. Constantly repeat the 2nd and 3rd row, thereby always leave 1 loop off the two loops of the 2nd row, that a big loop develops
Number of stitches is optional. 1st to 3rd row: Knit up all stitches right. 4th row: 1 stitch on the edge, *pointure the following stitch like knitting right, wrap the thread 2 times around the right needle and the right forefinger, then once again round the needle and knit all 3 threads as right stitches , afterwards take the 3 loops onto the left needle and knit them twisted right together with the right needle (i. e. grasping the backmost wire nettings). Now pull the working thread and both loops tight around the right forefinger and afterwards let them slip off the finger, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 5th-9th row: Knit up all stitches right. Constantly repeat row 4 to 9.
The number of stitches is dividable by 9 plus 5, plus 2 stitches on the edge. 1st row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 5 stitches left, cross 2 stitches to the right, cross 2 stitches to the left (see page 12), constantly repeat from *, at last 5 stitches left, 1 stitch on the edge. 2nd and 4th row: Knit up all stitches as they appear. 3rd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 5 stitches left, cross 2 stitches to the left, cross 2 stitches to the right, constantly repeat from *, at last 5 stitches left, 1 stitch on the edge. Constantly repeat these 4 rows.
Even or uneven number of stitches. 1st row: All stitches right. 2nd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 foldover, lift off 1 stitch right, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge, 3, row: 1 stitch on the edge, * knit together the following stitch twisted right at the foldover (i. e. grasping the hindmost wire nettings, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. Constantly repeat row 2 and 3.
The number of stitches is dividable by 2. 1st row: All stitches right. 2nd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 stitch, grab it together with fore-laid thread (like knitting left), 1 stitch right, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 3rd row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 stitch right, knit twisted the lifted stitch together with lifted thread right (grasping both backmost wire nettings), constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 4th row: 1 stitch on the edge, * 1 stitch right, lift off together 1 stitch with front-laid thread (like knitting left), constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge. 5th row: 1 stitch on the edge, * knit twisted the lifted stitch together with lifted thread right (grasping both backmost wire nettings), 1 stitch right, constantly repeat from *, 1 stitch on the edge.
