Knit stockings

Although we are pampered through the industry and can buy stockings in every form and size, we don’t want to miss, to reinstruct the basics for handcraft knitted stockings. There are many regions, where handcrafted knitted stockings are used to national costumes only and therefore it is essential to know how to knit stockings with the most beautiful patterns. The courtiers give the handcrafted stockings the right to be seen e.g. if the stockings have to suit to a handcrafted pullover. There aren’t cuts to produce good stockings but with the overview below, everyone can make his own opinion. You have to establish the extent in detail and Then make the draft. According to the overview we knit the stocking for size 39 on the following side. To take an extent we separate the whole length of leg into different parts.

A – From the superior edge to the hollow of the knee
B – From the hollow of the knee to the beginning of the calf
C - Calf
D – From the end of the calf to the beginning of the heel
E – Sock liner

The extents inside of the stockings always show the extent of the leg and the extents outside of the stocking show the length of the different parts. As material we chose gossamer sport wool and knitted it with 2mm diameter. The little sample, we made over 20 stitches shows that 4 stitches go in a breadth of 1 cm and in level 11 rows on 2 cm. We begin on the upper edge with 140 stitches and we need for part “A” (length 16 cm) 88 rounds. At first for the elastic edge you conduct 18 rounds 2 stitches right and 2 stitches left in change. 70 rounds are left. At the beginning of part “B” we have to abate the extent about 7 cm (= 28 stitches). Therefore we 14 times knit together the 2nd and 3rd stitch of the 1st needle (14 times) in every 5th round and the 3rd and the penultimate stitch of the 4th needle on the right. The 1st picture on page 12 shows this abates, however in every 4th round. Trough the middle 2 stitches go ahead evenly, at the left side to lean to the left and to the right to lean to the right. After the last abate follow 60 rounds even right for the part “B”. After the last abate 60 even right rounds follow for part “B”. To create part “C” you must abate the stitches about 32 bows inside of the 15 cm. Therefore we similarly knit as on part “A” and do 16 times abate 2 stitches in every 5th round. You knit for part “C” 66 rounds even right. Now you have got 80 stitches in the round, which you divide, equal on the 4 needles. The beginning of the round lies in the backmost middle. Now the heel begins. Therefore you knit up to the stitches of the 4th needle the bows from the 1st needle. The stitches of the 2nd and 3rd needle brake down. Above these 40 stitches the heel results, beginning with a back row. You knit forth and back going rows with chain selvedge, see picture 20. All forth rows will be knitted right and all back rows left. To create the mutual seam knit up only in the forward course the 2nd and 3rd stitch and the 3rd and penultimate stitch left.

Picture 30 shows such a heel. The heel has to count so many stitches in the height, as the stitches are wide. After the 38th line a forward course ended. Now we knit the cuneiform cap in shorted reciprocating courses, which is shown ready on picture 30. Begin with a back row too. Knit the 1st 21 stitches of the needle left up and Then knit together 2 stitches left and the other one to the left side. Now turn it. Decrease the 1st stitch as in the right knitting, 3 stitches right and knit together the following 2 stitches right and Then 1 stitch right. Change it.

Decrease the 1st stitch as in the left knitting, 4 stitches left, knit together the last cap stitch with the follow heel stitch left and knit in the follow heel stitch left. Now continue currently with the abated cuneiform. It means, knit together the last cap stitch with the following heel stitch in every following row and 1 stitch knitting towards. All the heel stitches are used up if the cap is ending. Then follow the sock liner, working in rounds. Pick up the elements in the back on the heel edge of the chain stitch and afterwards you cast off the stitches of the left heel edge right entwined and knit into back of the stitch on the cap. Then knit the stitches from the 2nd and 3rd needle right and Then knit entwined the stitches of the right heel edge. You pick up the half of the cap stitches in addition to the stitches of the 1st and 4th needle from the heel edge.

The beginning of the circle is now in the middle of the cap. To come up to the number of 80 stitches there will be knitted the last 2 stitches from the 1st needle right together and the first 2 stitches of the needle covered in every circle. This decrease, which you can see as a slope line you have to carry forward until you have at the 1st and 4th needle again 20 stitches.

Therefore you work changing a decreasing circle, which follows once 4, once 3, five times 2 and 5 times a right circle. Knit together always the last 2 stitches of a needle right in the decreasing circle. At the end you decrease in the same form and shortening the last 8 stitches.
